playing mommy

in my flats i hit the floor
feel face down
didn't help my heart out
and her momma left
before she came
before i lost
what magic
kept her happy
its never been a fantasy
of what she'd force me to be

don't judge me so harsh world
she's just a stand-in mommy
tell 'em my name
when you cross that
bridge i'll be holding her hand
and i'll never do her harm
from here to bethlehem,
i got a few friends

and i'll be here
as if ever was again
so when it counts
you get your way
i'm ashamed to say
you're my sister
a good friend
of blood's bolder
be her grave
i say it loud
playing jesus
so she won't lose out
somewhere the orchids grow
for the purple soul
talk about gloria
and nine months
to show

don't judge me so harsh world
she's just a stand-in mommy
tell 'em my name
when you cross that
bridge i'll be holding her hand
and i'll never do her harm
from here to bethlehem,
i got a few friends

when you get home
hoping
you know i'll be there
we'll be home
we'll be home
take you in my arms
do my best
to make it right
